EPT Budapest – playing on home soil

Written by: Csaba Toth

As a Team RedKings player I participated at the EPT in Budapest. I waited this event very much as I wanted to prove in the first ever Hungarian EPT event.

A meeting was arranged for our team before the tournament, so I arrived a few hours earlier to the casino to the get know the other Team RedKings players, Jesper and Tony and the representetives of RedKings who arranged everything for us, players to feel comfortable during the whole tournament.

This was the first time I met the guys and I can assure you that they are all nice guys :) So we were talking a lot and had an easy dinner before the tournament which didn’t decrease our hunger for collecting as many chips as possible.

My table seemed to be good for the first look except the fact, that a fellow Hungarian, Denes Kalo was my big blind who already finished twice in second position at the EPTs. All other players were unknown for me.
My table was really tight with a lot of limping and calling, but without many raises.

In the first few rounds I receieved twice a pair of aces and even had a set, but as normally I wasn’t paid so early in the tourney and I even lost with the set. So I first went down, but later on I managed to come back with stealings and with a full house I went over the avarage in the middle of the day.

Then as players were knocked out from my table, new faces arrived who were more dangerous than the others on their seats before. Mostly a French guy caused the most problems for me, he seemed to be playing a decent aggresive game, raising with a wide range of hands and won many small pots.

I decided to get over the control of the table, so I also started to be more agressive which this time didn’t work for me, once a pair of queens weakened me and after loosing another big pot I became shortstack. So I started to wait for my hand to double up, but my King Jack wasn’t enough against the opponent’s pair of fives. After playing 10 hours I had to finish the tournament just half an hour before the end of day 1. I hope I will do much better at the forecoming EPTs.

However I really enjoyed playing this tournament, the atmosphere was extremely good and I feel that I played a good game which didn’t work this time, but hopefully will work next time.

What I also found remarkable that only our team, Team RedKings did really have a team spirit. From starting the day together we came together in the brakes, discussed the hands and encouraged each other during the whole tournament. I am happy to be a member of such a fantastic team and would like to thank for RedKings all the help during the tournament.
